What is a site map? Well basically a site map is an index to a website. What that means is, if a person happens to come to your site and wants to see everything your site has has to offer, it is the perfect place for them to visit. It should provide them links to all the pages to your website, so they can easily navigate your website.

Its easy to create a site map yourself its not that complicated all you have to do is get all the links on your site together and then compile them in one place. So if you create a map and put a link on you home page that will ensure that search engine spiders follow the link off you home page and visit all the links on the map which, will in turn lead them to all the pages on your website. This a more effective way of getting your pages listed in the search engines.

A good thing to do is to make you site map the error page i.E. The 404 page, this is commonly known as the default page, it is served up if you have accidentally left a bad link on you website. If you have this directed to your map visitors will still have the option to continue navigating your site.

You should write a short description of each category of your website, or you can just the number the pages, but make sure you break every thing up into relevant sections so people can find what they are looking for more easily, depending on what kind of website you are running. Another good thing to do is to include a search box on your map so people can just type in there search request.
