Effective Website Tips - Avoiding Flash Websites

The main purpose of your website is to be seen and then act as a selling tool for you. A website with no visitors is like a store with no customers. 35% of all customers entering a department store will buy something; the other 65% are just browsing.

Effective Website Tips - Avoiding Flash Websites
There are a lot of reasons to avoid flash based design. Search engines such as Google claim that they now have the technology to crawl flash based pages. SEO optimizers claim that they haven't seen the changes, so the question is "should flash be used?"

There are many reasons why I discourage the use of flash, but there is one big one that basically proves why flash should not be used in most situations for web development. In today's internet world, the importance of proper internet marketing cannot be denied. Getting people to find your website is so much harder than before. Each search engine has its own method for crawling websites so it is extremely important that a website be created to be search engine friendly - for all search engines.

Flash is, unfortunately, the worst choice of a platform in respect to search engines. Google claims it has the ability to crawl flash based sites. However, SEO optimizers still report problems. Many other search engines still do not crawl flash sites. Although flash is genuinely graphically pleasing and if designed well, can offer a great web experience, search engines simply are not setup yet to use flash. Any raw content about anything on your site, if it is embedded in flash will not be picked up search engines. If your goal for your website it to have people find you using search engines such as Yahoo, Google or MSN, I would advise that you choose a new platform to develop your website.

Flash used to not be a problem with search engines. In fact, I can remember a time when it seemed like every website had some sort of flash coding, whether it was for the intro or for the entire site. Unfortunately, those days are now over, flash can have a huge impact on search engine visibility. If your site currently uses flash, I would suggest making the change, and soon. By converting over an existing site to an HTML or PHP format instead, it can help you reach the search engines. If you are using flash I can assure you that you haven't had the search engine advantage yet.

Flash may provide a solid form for an application. Such as an online video game or a moving banner, but at this point it is not suitable for proper internet marketing. If you have any question regarding your website's visibility I would suggest reading other related posts or contacting a web consulting company to assist you. If you are using flash, I hope I have made it clear that it is not ideal for internet marketing. In order to move closer to success, I suggest moving away from flash.
