My response is two-fold:

1. The website wasn't built with end-play marketing objectives in mind.

2. Web designers typically don't get involved with SEO and marketing.

The web design project should be the last element created for any online marketing effort. This is because seeing your whole project from the end is what it takes to build the website effectively. Rare is the web designer that is going to take the time for SEO considerations in a graphic project. First, they probably didn't include that in your design quote. Second, most designers are not optimization pros. Interview Yourself - Begin by asking yourself some basic questions. Then, have the website built around those answers. Below are some basic but very important considerations that will save you money, time and frustration:

·         How many products or services am I selling, and do I have a page for each?

·         What are the keywords associated with each of my products.

·         Is the content of the website keyword enriched, with proper densities?

·         Am I making good use of format for the content of each page?

I know that not everyone can be a SEO professional, but the internet is full of information that can give you a fairly quick overview of what it takes to make a successful website. And, as a website owner, the content is yours to develop. If you follow some basic rules regarding keywords and content, you will have a jump on many web projects and the competition. Also, when it's time to hire a SEO firm, most of the work is already done and you'll find the cost of SEO has been drastically reduced. Plus, you'll be better armed with information you'll need to effectively talk "shop" with your SEO pro.
